COFFEE and caffeine are fairly prevalent vices in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Not surprisingly, recent (year 2026) posts on social media and in podcasts have implied that coffee may be on the verge of being acceptable in the faith, because of increasingly positive health benefit studies about the beverage.
But, no, that's not going to happen -- and here's why. The Word of Wisdom is more than just a health code -- it helps to separate Latter-day Saints from the rest of the world. It is also a buffer commandment. Not being a partaker of coffee (decaf or not) is a key separation from Babylon.
Just like not partaking of alcohol, coffee too, combine to represent perhaps the two biggest buffers the Lord has to keep Saints from sin and liberal influences.
So, it is NOT just about physical health, it is about spiritual health too.
